Honouring Love and Loss: Bereaved Mother’s Day

Each year, on the first Sunday in May, a quiet and powerful day of remembrance takes place—Bereaved Mother’s Day. Created to honour and hold space for mothers who have experienced the devastating loss of a child, this day acknowledges a grief that is often invisible to the outside world.

While traditional Mother’s Day can be a time of joy and celebration, for many, it is also a painful reminder of what has been lost. Bereaved Mother’s Day offers a gentle, meaningful alternative—a day to recognize the enduring love, strength, and heartache of mothers who carry their children in their hearts rather than in their arms.

This day is for every mother who has experienced the death of a child, no matter the age or circumstances—whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, infant or child loss, or the death of an adult child. It is a day for mothers whose motherhood is unseen, for those who navigate grief alongside memories, and for those who quietly carry unimaginable pain.

Bereaved Mother’s Day is a reminder that:

  • A mother’s love never ends.
  • Her grief is valid and deserving of space.
  • She is still a mother—always.

Ways to Honour a Child (of Any Age)

There are many heartfelt ways to honour and remember a child on Bereaved Mother’s Day. What matters most is choosing something that feels right for you. Here are a few meaningful ideas:

  • Light a candle in your child’s memory.
  • Write them a letter or journal your thoughts and feelings.
  • Plant a flower, tree, or garden in their honour.
  • Create a memory box or scrapbook with photos, notes, or mementos.
  • Visit a meaningful place that reminds you of your child.
  • Say their name—out loud, in a post, or in a quiet moment.
  • Share their story with someone you trust or through creative expression.
  • Make a donation or volunteer in their name to a cause they would’ve loved.
  • Wear a keepsake like a bracelet, necklace, or piece of clothing that holds significance.

Remember, there is no “right way” to grieve or remember. Honour your child—and your motherhood—in whatever way feels most authentic to you.

You Are Not Alone

Grief can feel isolating, but compassionate support is available. Hospice Orillia offers a variety of grief and bereavement programs, including specialized groups for pregnancy and infant loss, adult-aged child loss, and more. These groups provide a safe, understanding space for those navigating life after loss.

Additionally, support is available through the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Outreach North Simcoe Muskoka (PILO NSM) program, which offers peer support, community connections, and resources for individuals and families impacted by early loss.

If you are not located in the North Simcoe Muskoka region, know that help is still within reach. Hospice organizations across Canada and beyond offer similar grief and bereavement supports. Reach out to a hospice in your area—they will be able to provide more information about the services and programs available in your local community.

If you know a bereaved mother, a simple act of kindness—acknowledging her child, speaking their name, or just letting her know she’s remembered—can mean the world.

And to all the bereaved mothers: your love, your loss, and your story matter. Today, and every day, we honour you.

Understanding What You’re Feeling

Grief is a normal reaction to the loss of a loved one. It can also be a reaction to the loss of relationships, physical ability, opportunities or future hopes and dreams.

Bereavement is the state of having suffered the loss of a loved one. It is the time after a loss during which grief is experienced and mourning occurs.

Mourning is the external expression of grief. It includes rituals that mark someone’s death, such as funerals, wakes or memorial services. Mourning is strongly influenced by a person’s spiritual and cultural beliefs and practices.

    Land Acknowledgement

We would like to acknowledge that the land which we are gathered on today is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabek Nation; specifically, the Chippewa Tri – Council comprised of the Chippewas of Beausoleil, Rama and Georgina Island First Nations and more recently the Mississaugas of the Credit River First Nation.

Ontario is covered by 46 treaties and other agreements and is home to many Indigenous Nations from across Turtle Island, including the Inuit and the Métis. These treaties and other agreements, including the One Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, are agreements to peaceably share and care for the land and its resources. Other Indigenous Nations, Europeans, and newcomers were invited into this covenant in the spirit of respect, peace, and friendship.

Most of us have come here as settlers, immigrants, or newcomers in this generation or generations past.

We are all Treaty people.  Every day we are mindful of broken covenants, and we strive to make this right. We commit to collaborating based on the foundational assumption that Indigenous Peoples have the power, strength, and competency to develop culturally specific strategies for their communities.  We are dedicated to honouring Indigenous self-determination, history, and culture, and are committed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect with all First Nation, Métis and Inuit people.
